“Jump In” Ukulele Tutorial vlog #19

For VLOG#19 I wanted to try something different and a bit off the topic of art but still on solid creative ground. Since I had a few request for more info about my song “Jump In” I decided to push my artistic boundaries and try my hand at making an ukulele tutorial. This episode ended up being waaaay more involved than previous ones and also twice as long.

I am pretty new to song writing, but I hope that by sharing my efforts with you it will inspire you to explore your own musical talents by singing or playing along, writing your own tune of getting motivated to learn how to play an ukulele or some other instrument.

I will be back with more art tutorials next month, but it you would like to see more uke tutorials let me know by leaving a comment below. Also, if you dig it feel free to share this video with your friends!

The back story to “Jump In” can be found by clicking this link.

Here are the lyrics to Jump In:

(VERSE 1)

Wake up bright and early to the morning breeze

before da sun rises above *Na Pali

Coffees in the pot, oatmeals on the table top

soon it will be light enough outside to see.

C’mon sleepy head get up out of bed

grab your cup and fill your bowl.

Were eating breakfast on the road

cause its time to go

down the mountain that how well roll

…and well be singin’

(CHORUS)

Briny briny, sunny shiny, lets surf our days away

sandy toes and freckled noses the ocean is where we like to play

Lets all jump in!

(VERSE 2)

When da waves come head high then it time to ride.

down to the beach, like right away

Don’t make me wait, no can hesitate

when the surf is up and it’s time to glide

We’ll spend all day under the sun

out in the water having fun.

Lets not talk about responsibility

because today we live like ocean royalty.

…and we’ll be singin’

(CHORUS)

Briny briny, sunny shiny, lets surf our days away.

sandy toes and frecked noses the ocean is where we like to play

Lets all jump in!

“Hey all you **Kane & Wahines out there, get those surfboards waxed up and get on down to the beach. We got 3-5 swells coming in from the south and its a beautiful day. Aloha!”

(VERSE 3)

When the day is ***pau and were all worn out

We’ll build a fire and talk story about our day.

while our food is cookin’ we’ll be a-braggin’

but lets not speaks of the ones that got away.

Now in the late of night

when the stars are shining bright,

were off to to bed with drowsy smiles.

Well dream about the slides and watery curls,

thankful for our surfin’ lifestyle.

Thanks so much for the Uke lesson today. I have a uke and don’t know how to play it and can’t seem to find the time to learn. You’ve inspired me – when I get home from work today I am going to play with my uke! :)

Really glad to hear you liked the little uke lesson Elissa! I was stretching out of my comfort zone and was unsure if my readers were ready for a “music” video, but if one person was inspired then I consider the time doing it well spent. Thanks for letting me know.

Great post! I think the ukulele is the perfect instrument for anyone who has a voice that needs some back-up and not a lot of time to learn to play. Even without writing your own songs it can be a good creative challenge to figure out how to make someone else’s tune “work” with your skill set and of course to adapt it to fit your own style. FUN STUFF!

Here’s my version of “Istanbul (Not Constantinople)” done ala uke.

Right on Braddah Charlie, thanks for the comment and sharing your video. Tis a fine rendition you have achieved using all of four strings! One of the things that I find most charming about the lil uke is that it comes across way less pretentious than a guitar. Often times I don’t think people are expecting it to be much more than a twangy novelty and somewhat surprised by how expressive they actually can be.
